Rond die tijd was op Nederland 1 namelijk een live-verslag te zien van de Koningsvaart.Ook actualiteitenprogramma Pauw en Witteman trok meer kijkers dan gemiddeld. Ruim 2 miljoen zagen hoe onder meer Sybrand van Haersma Buma, Sonja Barend, Maarten van Rossem en Marianne Thieme de dag bespraken. Het was de tweede keer dat de abdicatie van een Nederlandse vorst rechtstreeks op televisie werd uitgezonden. Op 30 april 1980 zagen 6,6 miljoen mensen hoe prinses Beatrix koningin werd.
